SUPPORT CREW: ALAN ELPHINSTONE, PETER WILSON, JO HICKS, PATTI WILSON, TARA SHIPSIDES, KERRY PRESTON, RACHAEL PIPER. This is the event that marks the official commencement of Redman Runners so it is the one single event that everyone is keen to be a part of each year. 2008 was no exception. To write a few lines about the weekend would not do justice to the effort put in by the runners and support crew so I will give you a day by day description and hope that you enjoy and appreciate the events of the three days. Day One Friday 21st November. Packing up during a hail storm is a new experience for Road Relay Eve and I was hoping this was not an omen for the weekend. I knew I should have taken Larry the Leprechaun with me. We certainly needed the luck of the Irish with the weather, even with Tara as support crew. After heading off at 3.30am we were soon on our way to the race start in Beenleigh. Everyone was bleary eyed but buzzing with excitement. Justin our Energizer Bunny was keen to get going (we have to run him early to get rid of some of his energy). The vehicles were readied, buses loaded and we were underway for a fun weekend. Justin got us off to a great start and was soon followed by Mountain Man Mark Carrol and Mark Taylor who ran the next four legs. Mark has two of the fastest legs in Brisbane so his contribution was greatly appreciated. We arrived in Beaudesert and were pleased to find ourselves in the top six. This meant we had to give the slower teams a 45 minute head start to Rathdowney. Lucky for us, our runners were so good we managed to overtake many of these teams and be one of the early groups to make it to Rathdowney with plenty of time to have lunch and a short nap. We managed to be fast enough to flick the thousands of flies and flying ants that met us along the way. The air was heating up quickly and the steam was rising from the wet ground. This was not a good omen for the runners on the road in the afternoon. The final but longest stage of the day was the trek to Boonah. It was HOT and HUMID. All the new kids were excited to be out on the road, the experienced members were cautious about the weather. It was not looking good for tomorrow. Mark Carrol headed off for the Hero Leg (for serious nutters who love running up mountains, not hills). He did us proud, running a better time than last year. Dave McKenna managed to trip over during his run but regained his feet and made it to the changeover zone with limited battle scars. Much to Michael Kinnes relief. We made it to Boonah in good time for the Criterium. John Drysdale and Justin led the group with Jessica Windsor taking out the award for the First Female to finish. Well done Jess. Redman were making our presence felt but we had a couple of casualties. Trudy Schneider had blown a calf and Liz Dooley had an Achilles problem that wouldnt go away. With the race restart in Yangan on Saturday morning, I decided some time ago that we would stay in Warwick on Friday night and avoid the drive in the early hours on Saturday morning. This proved to be a bonus. We had great accommodation, although Chris Buckley would like the world to know that Justin is a Doona Hog. Everyone else had a great nights sleep and were ready at 5am to head to Yangan. DAY TWO YANGAN TO TOOWOOMBA Saturday morning dawned and the sky was bright, the temperature cool and the wind slight. I was about to praise Alan Barbers forecast when the wind picked up and started howling. Not good, definitely not good unless you weigh 100kgs or so. The race started with a new format, two runners per team per section. The Speed Demons (Justin and Johnny) were our lead runners. Waiting at the changeover zone it didnt take long for them to appear together and urging each other on. They got us off to a great start. Michael and Dave, Jess and Garry continued until the Mountain Men, Mark and Peter Duncan took over for a tough 6k up serious inclines and down serious downhills with a nasty uphill finish. They both finished in the top group and we were looking good. They handed over to the Testerone Kids, Mocha and Chris who managed to keep us in the top group eventhough Mocha had a cold and Chris had a girl giving him a run for his money. Geoff A and Paul took over for the last leg into Killarney and we were looking good. Trudy and Liz had given their injured legs a test run and sensibly decided that they would rest today and hopefully race again tomorrow. A bit of a reshuffle and we were on our way again after Kerry worked his magic on a few sore bits and pieces. The lucky people who had run the earlier stages didnt notice the wind as it was a tail wind. Those of us running on the stage to Warwick were not feeling too happy. Sarah and I were particularly concerned. We were being buffeted just standing still in the park at Killarney, what was it going to be like out on the exposed highway??? Again we had to give the slower teams 45minutes head start before we hit the road. Sarah lead us out and was immediately hit with a galeforce headwind. She battled on to give us the lead. Garry took over but his injured calf prevented him from running at his best. The wind was picking up. Michael and I were sitting in the car waiting and the wind was rocking the Tarago. I was not looking forward to this. I have never run in such conditions. The wind was flinging my ponytail into the side of my face. My left leg was hitting my right leg and my mouth was so dry from the hot air I was swearing. A runner from Victory Sports was swearing more than I was, it made me feel better that even the fast guys were struggling. I found out later that the WICEN radio guys measured the wind gusts along this section at 100kph. The only good thing about this section was seeing the Ashtons, Peter and Mary tooting as they drove past. The lovely Mary had arrived with bags of goodies she had baked for everyone. If anything can make you feel better after a run, it is some of Marys home cooked bikkies and slices. She is a gem and her cooking was greatly appreciated by everyone and didnt last long at all. Even the support crew were taken care of. Thanks Mary, Redman loves you and your cooking. We continued the trek to Warwick but Mel and her hip had a falling out and Michael did the gentlemanly thing and took over from her so she could have a chance to visit Kerry and his magic fingers for some treatment. We finally arrived in Warwick and the 5k Road Race got underway. Redman runners were very good with Chris Buckley the star. Alright, this is going to hurt Buckley beat Wes and Ricky Swindale, the pin-up boys of running. This little effort gave Chris bragging rights for the weekend. He has the winners shirt to prove it. The afternoon saw little letup with the wind but we pressed on. Once again having to give the slower teams 45minutes head start. We finally arrived at the finish and headed to Toowoomba for a swim, dinner and bed. Well, that was the plan. Usually our team arrives in Toowoomba together. This year I had to remain at the finish for a managers meeting. Unfortunately, this meant I didnt get the chance to check in with the caretaker at Harristown High. After dinner, everyone hit the sack and I went around locking the doors and turning off the lights. The caretaker had forgotten to leave the keys for the light switches. Disaster. Geoff A rang the emergency numbers only to find the caretakers wife had gone to work with his car. The second contact turned up in his pjs and dressing gown and managed to find a key. I turned off the lights but as I went to find my bed, I triggered the sensors and the alarms went off. Geoff made another frantic phone call and we got the pin codes and disabled the alarms. So much for a good nights sleep. This after hearing the Kangaroos had lost. Paul Ross, Sarah and Geoff (our resident Kiwis) were elated. The wind howled all night and the temperature plummeted. DAY THREE TOOWOOMBA TO HOME The air was cold, the wind was howling as we headed for the start line. At this point we were in 5th place and looking good for a great finish. Justin got us underway for the day with Liz Atkin taking over for her favourite type of running, down seriously steep hills. Liz won the Queen of the Downhill Trophy for the fastest female time for this downhill run. Congratulations Liz. At the bottom of the range, the weather conditions were perfect. We were sheltered from the wind so everyone running the early sections had brilliant runs. Liz D and Trudy managed to make an appearance with Trudy beaming as her leg held up. Liz D managed to limp/run her way to the changeover zone in very heroic style. Dolph the physio is not going to be happy with these two. Wait until he sees the rest of us later in the week! We arrived in Gatton in good time and in a good position. The wind had picked up and clouds of red dust appeared on the horizon. It looked as though all the topsoil from western Queensland had arrived in Gatton. Everyone was sniffling, sneezing or wheezing. This final stage was going to be tough. The only good thing was the wind had turned to a tail wind. Peter Duncan lead us out and ploughed his way through one of the toughest runs of the weekend. Everyone running in this section was blown around by the cold wind and covered in dust. We were nearly there. Paul, Mel, who ran through a huge dust cloud, Geoff A and Sarah all had great runs. Trudy was looking forward to getting out there one last time and proving her leg would stand up to another run. Michaels hayfever was not helping him but he put in a huge effort in a really nasty section. I had the final run in to Lowood while those who volunteered for the trail race could get themselves ready for the final trail section (I dont like getting my shoes dirty). I finally could see why the others had enjoyed their runs this morning, it does make a difference being blown along rather than running into a wall of wind. It made the big hill to the Finish Line a bit easier to run, although by this stage adrenaline had kicked in and it was exciting to be at the Finish Line with everyone cheering as I made it down the other side. The trail race got underway and Peter Duncan was the first Redman home in stage one with Justin taking out the honours in the second section. We had made it to the end. Well done to all the runners and support crew. SPECIAL MENTIONS: Ian Ooi: Mocha, Kenyan wanna-be. Poor Mocha. He was so looking forward to another really fast weekend when the dreaded Head Cold germs visited him last week and wouldn't leave. After taking every drug known to mankind (he must have raided Michael Kinne's stash) Mocha didn't give up but gave his all out on the road. It isn't easy to run with a blocked nose, stuffy head and feeling totally miserable but Mocha (the team man) was not only happy to do his own runs but volunteered to pick up any extra as well. We don't need a Kenyan in the team, we have our very own Mocha. Peter Duncan - Peter flies up from Sydney each year to join us and usually runs some of the most difficult runs of the weekend and does them very quickly. Mark Carrol Mark has the nickname of Mountain Man for good reason. I dont think there is a mountain that could beat him. He tackles the tough runs with gusto and speed. Justin - Speed Demon, Ranga, Doona Hog all dont give an indication of his speed and his ability to keep us in the top group all weekend. Johnny Speed Twin, Jason Donovan. Another speedster who gets the long legs wound up and flies along at a rapid pace. Johnny we love your style especially when you mow down the opposition. Chris Wes Beater. Chris doesnt need to do anything else this year. A first timer who has had a brilliant first year of running. Gold Coast in 3hr 7mins plus other great achievements at Road Runners and a gutsy performance for three days of the relay. Paul Ross Kiwi. He who gets along at a rapid pace without looking as though he is really trying. This man is one tough cookie. Always smiling as he runs, he runs down the opposition before they know it. Michael Kinne My Relay Right Hand Man. Not only is Michael a great 2IC he is also one of the gutsiest runners in the team. No matter how tough the run is, Michael always gives 100% just as he does with organizational jobs during the weekend. Thanks for driving the bus to give Peter a break. Garry Holt Big Gazza. Unfortunately our mate who loves every run and every day is a beautiful day for a run got injured and could not run after Saturday morning. Hopefully Garry can have a good break and make it back for a bigger and better year of running in 2009. Geoff A Roberts Tech Geoff. With Slim in Perth, Geoff took the job of being our Tech Man for the weekend. So now we know that not only can Geoff run very quickly, he can also moonlight as a sound and lighting expert. Geoff is also a great team man. He is happy to do the Dad type jobs of organizing clean ups and bus tidying expeditions. Geoff J Roberts Elite. Geoff has made a remarkable transformation from struggling with fitness and weight this time last year to running very fast and taking on some of the tough runs this year. Well done Geoff. Keep up the great work for 2009. Trudy Schneider Little Trudy, Tough Trudy, B1. Trudy has been dogged by injuries this year. Some of which would have seen less tough runners wave the white flag and quit. Not our Trudy. She toughed out the Gold Coast Marathon with a calf injury and now tackled the relay with a stress fracture that threatened to leave her as a passenger for the weekend. Her smile yesterday as she made it through her section was fantastic. Great work Trudy. Sarah Wood B2. Another newbie. Sarah is one fast chick. A Pat Carroll award winner, Sarah has had a fantastic year on the road and she proved her worth this weekend. Sarahs first run was in the heat of the day on Friday and Im sure she wondered what she had gotten herself into for the weekend. She toughed out the wind on Saturday and the dust yesterday to finish the weekend in great style. Well done Sarah Jessica Windsor Queen of the Hils, First Female Boonah Criterium. Jessica is also a newbie this year but didnt she make an impact! Jess is one tough runner. Nothing fazes Jess and she is happy to tackle any run no matter how difficult it is. Outstanding running Jess, you will have an awesome 2009. Mel Canfell Mum to many on the bus. Not only can she run but what a difference it makes to have a Mum on board. Mel kept law and order and made sure everyone was behaving themselves. The mother of six, including quads, Mel had no problems coping with bus behavior. Just like a school camp she said on Saturday. Hmmmmm! Liz Atkin Downhill Queen. Liz enjoys the normal runs but thrives on steep downhills. After a year that included struggles with injuries and marrying Bruce Jones, Liz was finally in good form and managed to win the Queen of the Downhill Trophy for the fasted female down the Range. Well done Liz. This is a much deserved award and thanks for the photocopying. Liz Dooley Movie Critic / Runner / Great Team Person. Liz has struggled with an Achilles injury that loves her so much it doesnt want to go away. After a very heroic effort in the Sydney Marathon 8 weeks ago (running a pb on a tough course with an injury) Liz has struggled to get her leg right. Unfortunately, it caved in on Friday. I wonder if it had a deal with Trudy and Garrys calves. They all went at the same time. Liz was determined to run again so she hit the road with her usual smile and determination and ran/limped her way through her section. What a gutsy effort for the team. Well done Liz. Hope you are back on the road again soon. I need someone to talk to during those long Saturday runs. Dave McKenna Macca has had a tough year fighting illness and injury. At least Dave made it all the way this year. Last year he made it to Canungra then left in the ambulance with a twisted bowel. Dave has battled back injuries recently and put in a top effort this weekend. Hope you have a better year next year Dave. Warwick is not far away. Jason Lonergan Mr Entertainment. Jason is usually a fast bloke on the road but a calf injury at Noosa Tri prevented him from showing his style this year. At least we were able to keep him on the bus this year. It was so good having Jase along as Entertainment Manager, Sports Psychologist and Personal Manager for Elite. Hopefully Jason will be back next year with his big smile and big heart. Mark Taylor Tayls. Mark needed to have a run so he gladly joined the team for a marathon effort on Friday morning. Mark is usually in the really, really fast Telstra team. He put in an awesome effort on Friday morning to help us get a great start for the weekend. Good luck for the Australian Triathlon Championships next weekend Mark. Redman Runners will be cheering you on. Alan Elphinstone Elfman. Every team should have an Elf on board. Our Elf is the best. He looks after the dollars and makes sure we have enough to pay for the weekend. He organized the inaugural Redman Ball and was there throughout the weekend running up and down the highways and backroads providing us with water and sprays to keep us cool. He never takes a break and always greets you with a smile even when you are cursing and swearing out on the road. You are the best Elf and we are glad you are on our team. Tara Shipsides Irish Eyes are smiling. Tara (Mum to be) spent the weekend checking out the backsides of the Redman Team. She did this while undertaking timekeeping duties, changing cds so everyone had their music playing and navigated our way around the 500ks of the course. Well done Tara, we really appreciate your effort and good humour during the weekend and hope you come back next year. Jo Hicks Best Driver Award. After being a bit overwhelmed by what she might have volunteered herself for, Jo was given special mention at the Managers meeting on Saturday night for being the best driver on the course. We now know Jo isnt scared to go off-road in a Tarago. Thanks for your great work during the weekend Jo, you are a champion. Bathurst next year Jo? Redmans own V8 Supercar Hero. Peter Wilson Driver of the Big Bus. Pete with his whacky hat and wicked sense of humour drove the troops from cheering point to cheering point during the weekend. This is perhaps the worst job of all, putting up with noise, sweaty bodies, lots of other crazy drivers and lots of rules and regulations. Thanks Pete, without you volunteering to do this, we would have been in trouble. Thanks also for taking on a crit run as well. Patti Wilson Elfmans Water Wench. Patti is one of those people who manages a smile and a kind word when times are tough or she senses someone needs a hug. Patti spends the entire weekend with Elf in the Water Truck handing out water, spray and kind words along the way. Patti always says something nice as you run past and it always makes you feel better even when the going is tough. Kerry Preston Magic Fingers. Kerry spent the weekend helping out in the Follow Vehicle, Running and working magic on injured body parts. I can personally recommend his massaging. He fixed my lower back tightness on Saturday morning and it was still good Sunday afternoon. He worked magic tricks on a number of people and Kerry thanks for your great work. Another great Relay Weekend over. Planning for 2009 will begin next week. If you have any suggestions for next year, can you let me know within the next week or so as I will need to start planning, booking etc for 2009 as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone for being such a great team. It is easy to organize a group such as Redman Runners. Many comments from other teams during the weekend backed this up we have one very special group. I hope you are all going to return next year to make 2009 even better. Cheers Judy Bell
