RED MAN RUNNERS AT THE MOOLOOLABA OLYMPIC DISTANCE TRIATHLON 2009. (1500 MT SWIM, 40 RIDE, 10KM RUN)
The view from a team runner. By Andrew: I got a 43.48 which was a bit slower than expected. Our mixed team finished 43/211 mixed teams and 132/629 all teams. I found it a bit tough with the wind & the hill & was a bit disappointed with my time. Also the overall tiredness of the others finishing off the full tri was a bit infectious; different to other races where you're in a similarly paced group. The teams start at the back (our start was 8.00) so the run really is a mix of the slow & walking. Only about two or three blue-bands ran past me. Maybe I should do the full next time!
The view of a first time Olympic Distance Triathlete. By Justin: Well I have to say that my first crack at an Olympic Distance Tri was very satisfying..People are going to say "wanker" when I say this but I really wanted to crack 40mins on the run but have come to realize that that's just not that easy. I went to Mooloolaba all cocky that the running training I have done was more that enough to crack the elusive 40min off the bike. But I wasn't thinking about the infamous Sunshine Coast SE trade winds heading back on the bike leg. That and my knee just only just held out after a little niggle I seemed to gain the week before the Tri climbing Mt Nebo. My main gold was to crack 2:20 and with 2:18 I still can't wipe the smile from my face. It was great to see a large crew of familiar RMR faces on the run legs. I ran past Peter D (AKA Supreme Running Weapon) on the first hill only to be massively humbled but his power and pace the very next time we ran over the same hill. I had a chat with Pete after the race and he is averaging 50-100kms a week in his running training. He also ran a very impressive 17:23 in the Asics 5km Bolt on Friday night. The man is a freak. Oh, he also competed in the 1km Ocean Swim on Saturday..Is there nothing he can't do well.. ?
The view of an under trained age-grouper. By Alan: The Mooloolaba Tri is my favourite event of the year and I absolutely love the location. It's a wonderful spot for a weekend away and unfortunately that is how I treated this race. This is not a list of excuses I just thought you might find it amusing to know how humble you can become if you pay this race no respect. I have just gone up into a new age-group and standing at the start of the swim (which I was very disappointed was not in the surf) waiting for the pool swimmers to kick my ass I was impressed with how much friendlier and more relaxed my new tribe was. It concerned me that my 10 entry pool pass still had enough credits to allow a small family a swim session, but it was too late to worry about that now. That horrible horn sounded and the white caps were off. Overall the swim didn't go too badly and my new tribe proved to be polite in the water as well. I made the beginners error of not finding something to site up on at the swim exit and wondered all over the course coming back in. It was a long transition run to the bike and I used the one thing I had trained for to pick up a few competitors. Then came the bit that worried me. There is no where to hide on the 40km bike course if you're under-trained and even in the opening 20km down wind it was embarrassing how many bikes were passing me. At the turn we had 20 km into the wind and my legs were already unhappy. I had only bolted the aerobars on again two days earlier and my hamstrings were not enjoying the aero position and pushing into the wind. Then the showers started and I just had to watch as guys in my age-group kicked past me. To add insult; the helmet numbers weren't water proof and mine came loose and began to flap against my forehead. Not happy! Coming into town all I could think of was how much will this take away from my run legs and just how sore are they going to be. Running the bike into transition I had my answers. Probably a fair bit and my hamstrings were screaming. It took 3km on the run course for my run legs to come back and then I actually enjoyed the last 7km. It was tremendous to see the other RMRs out there going hard. I had hoped for a triathlon miracle and I guess I got one. Once again I loved the race! The time wasn't flash but it was what I deserved for paying the race no respect. Hopefully we will have even more RMRs crossing over to the Triathlon next year. Note to self; TRAIN !!
