Run Report by Alan.B: Gary.H, Peter.W and myself were returning to a race that we had enjoyed last year and we had talked a few other Redman Runners into joining us. Last year I had gone out fairly quickly, under estimated the effects of the heat and humidity and struggled home in 2:12:41 as part of a 2 person relay team. My goal for the 2008 event was to go out calmly and attempt to hold approx 5 min kilometres aiming to run about 2:05:00. This is a very friendly low key event as the race start process showed. About 200 runners gathered in the park next to the Kurrawa Surf Club for the 5am start. You can leave at 4.30am for the 50km event if you think you will be slower than most of the field. As 5 o'clock approached the starter said; "10 seconds to go". Then in a calm quiet voice; "Go". That's it, and the field is away. This report follows the race of the 3 Redman Runners who finish 11th, 12th and 13th males home in the 25km event. Hopefully we will be able to add the stories of John.D who disappeared off with the front of the field, Dave.Y who was in behind us and Peter.W who went out calmly with 50km to cover. Within a kilometre of the start Andrew, Gary and I were running shoulder to shoulder telling jokes and trying to make each other laugh which is a sure sign we were a little nervous about racing 25 kilometres at a frankly stupid time of year. At the 8 kilometre mark (I love my Garmin) we were still together in a loose group but most of the talk had gone and each of us was settling into our own race. The "Chris-es", Chris.B and Christine were there with iced water for the three of us. What a magnificent effort they put in throughout the entire race. Fellow competitors were offering money for the same service. Christine had an esky on the back of the ute full of bottles of ice water and also the Road Relay spray bottle and they were there for us between each 5km official drink stop. THANK YOU guys! At 10 kilometres Andrew slipped away from Gary and myself and I couldn't help but wonder whether he was going to prove to strong in the hot humid conditions or if perhaps the 'old dogs' had learnt a bit from last years race and would gather him in toward the end. At this stage I let Gary creep away and held 5 min pace as I got into a conversation with a chap called Don. It was a bit depressing that he was running 50km and was very happy to run my planned pace for the 25km journey. Don and I solved the problems of the world for the next 10 km as we attempted not to think about the rising sun and heat, and he was very appreciative of the iced water from our gun water team which appeared regularly. At this point you must remember that this was never meant to be a race between the three Redma Runners. It just turned out that way. Not many funny things happen during a 25km race but the look on Andrew's face at the 20km drink stop when he looked around to see both Gary and I about 20 metres away did make me laugh. I'm sure he was hoping not to see us again till the recovery area. He quickly put his head back down and was off to Duranbah. He couldn't have known that Gary and I were starting to struggle and that neither of us was really in any shape to bridge the gap quickly. Gary and I swapped spots in the field a couple of times in the next 2 kilometres until Gary's long tough season and injury problems allowed me to slowly open a gap. Then I had to decided did I have anything left in the tank to go after Andrew with. Should I just settle into this pace and not put up a chase. I know if I look down the road I'm going to see him! I decided if I didn't chase I would be dirty with myself. If I chase and can't get him that will be fine, won't it? Like hell it will ! Sometimes I hate being competitive. There was very little left in my legs but I did look down the road and there he was about 300 metres ahead. It is hard to describe what I did for the next couple of kilometres as a chase, but hey at that stage it felt like a sprint. By the bottom of the Point Danger hill I was within 100 metres of Andrew and hoping that he may slow because I sure as hell couldn't quicken. He didn't! Okay down the hill I'll give it everything and he may not. He did! Into the park and we can see the finish and I get the distinct impression he knows I'm there. I'm within 15 metres of him, one last attempt. We sprint to the line and lunge !! The finisher calls.... "Dead Heat!" We gasp for breath and I turn around to good heartedly argue that I got him on the line. (Which I believe I did! - unfortunately there is no official 'line'. Just two people standing together taking numbers). The officials assistant then says; "How do I record these two?" The response; "Give it to Andrew and just put their times a second apart". WHAT !?!! And that's what they did. Okay the official results show Andrew beat me by a second but I will argue it while I still have breath. Congratulations John.D on finishing 4th male in the 25km event! Fantastic effort to run 4 minute kilometre pace for much of the way. David.Y for battling it out on very limited training and Peter.W, bloody unbelievable that he should even volunteer to run 50km in December. To the water crew; Once again thank you! It is a tremendous event, and what a setting. A very relaxed race with a great atmosphere. It is a race where your head has to rule your heart. It is just too hot and humid to go out hard like a half marathon in July. If you like to challenge yourself give it a go next December.
