Brisbane Marathon 2009

Melanie on the Brisbane Marathon day: I was lucky enough to get to run with various people including a run down to Orliegh Park with      Dave. Garry H yet again proves to be a fabulous team member and all round good guy. Not only did he do a great half himself, he then      jumped in and ran the last 11 or so K with his mate Dave, just to make sure he got home OK.

Thanks to Mel for putting together the results from the day.

BRISBANE MARATHON REPORT: By Judy Bell

After a few weeks of wondering what the weather gods were going to come up with for our day out, it was no surprise then to wake up at    4am and find that a running singlet was warm enough and no other top or gloves were required.  (Oh how Dave wished he had run the    Gold Coast marathon).  Arriving at the Start area, all the Redman runners managed to find each other and discussion soon turned to the    weather, drink stops and the hot sections of the course.
Standing on the Start line with all the Half Marathoners squashed in as well, the humidity started to rise quickly and I knew we were in for a    tough, hot day.  Everyone had set their Garmins (how did we ever run without these?)and were ready to go when Steve Manning    announced that due to problems with the timing equipment, the race start would be delayed.  Was this an omen for the rest of the day?     Nice one!  The sun was coming up and the temperature was starting to climb.  We just wanted to be off and running.
Eventually we got underway with Half Marathoners flying past and marathoners trying to maintain an easy pace – it was a jumble to get out    of Little Stanley street, sharp turn into Grey Street, (oops mind the gutter/median strip/gutter/roundabout), sharp turn into the Flag    Court, stumble over the gutter, through the park, skip over another gutter,  under the tunnel, up the ramp of GOMA, (very squashy here    with all the runners jammed into one lane,  sharp turn into Montague Road and we were then able to settle down for the run out to Orleigh    Park.   We missed the first drink station as the helpers didn’t have it set up.
We were soon at Orleigh Park and turning around (I think this was number 10 of 2000 turns in the race) for the run back to Southbank.     So far the shade was keeping us cool.  Dave and I had Liz and Geoff in our sights and we knew Big Chris was somewhere behind us.  A    quick check of the pace and we were spot on although the k markers were a bit out.  The Redman Half Marathon runners were all looking    very relaxed and in good shape.
The run back through Southbank was a bit hot.  By this time I was on my own. Dave had a pit stop and I was waiting for him to catch up.     The run along the front of Southbank was soon over (even the hump) and it was the first of four runs on the Goodwill Bridge.  Gary    Pettiford, Helen Key and Christine were doing a good job of cheering us on as were the Redman crew sipping coffee at Chez Leila.
Up and over the Goodwill Bridge and the run through the Gardens was uneventful. I was glad I had decided to run with my “Tunes” as I    had no-one to talk to. This was my first marathon without my running buddy Michael Kinne.  Back across the bridge and down past    Redman to Cpt Burke Park.  I hate rocks when running and was not happy to find that we had to run over the rocks and gravel on the    path at the bottom of the cliffs.  The poor marshal standing there calling out “Slow down, mind the rocks and stones” must have copped    heaps during the morning.  Finally made it to Cpt Burke after colliding with Half marathoners coming back along the path.  Somewhere    along here I heard someone calling my name.  It was Mel Canfell.  She ran along with me back to Redman where we decided she would wait    to see if Dave was ok.  Thanks for the chat Mel.
Back to Southbank and the marshal wasn’t sure which way I had to go. Thankfully some of the crowd knew and directed me around the    markers and back along the front of the pool where some kind people offered me cool drinks and ice.  This time we had to run along the    boardwalk (Yippee, no Montague Rd this time), up past the Milk Factory, through the road works and on to Riverside Drive.  I had    forgotten how much the Milk Factory stinks in hot weather.  The run out to Orleigh was starting to get a bit hot.  Even the front runners    looked as though they were starting to suffer a little.  I was starting to feel a bit queasy from the sports drink but knew I had to keep    drinking it.  It reminded me of liquid fruit tingles – fizzy and way too sweet.  I still had not managed to find Dave but saw Liz and Geoff    ahead and they were still travelling well.  Johnny Drysdale, looking very cool on his bike, pulled alongside to make sure all was good.  He    then went in search of Dave to make sure he was ok.
Back to Southbank and my stomach was not liking this at all.  Michael Kinne was waiting with a drink and he ran with me to the Goodwill    Bridge where Redman cheer squad was getting bigger. Tara, Chris Buckley, Jo, Gary P., Dennis and Dave Shortt had joined the crew.
Hump run number 2, Goodwill number three and only 12k to go.  This lap around the Gardens was horrible.  The air was hot and still.    Coming around past the main entrance, I saw a large queue at the Frog Tap.  Everyone was struggling.  The fourth run back over the    Goodwill was over before I knew it and all that remained was the run to Cpt Burke and back.  This ended up being the toughest bit of the    entire race.  By now, the Sunday visitors to Southbank were out in force and some were not too quick to move out of the way. The worst    past was dodging the 8k walkers still on their way to Cpt Burke and the 10k runners on their way back.
I swore when I got to the rocks and stones section this time.  The dust was nasty, the weather was nasty, the sports drink was nasty and    I just wanted to finish and have a cool shower.  Arriving at Cpt Burke park, the marshal informed me that this time round we had to do    TWO laps of the park.  She said” Please don’t swear at me, everyone else has been swearing at me” .    Wonder why?????
It was on the last lap that I passed Liz who was still looking good and ran into Geoff who had decided to stop for a stretch.  I decided to    make the most of the tap (glad we know where all the taps are) and take a GU with some real water.  Geoff informed me that he was going    to be sensible and stop and stretch then take it easy back to the finish.  The heat was getting to him and he was starting to cramp up.  I    congratulated him on being sensible and left him to his own devices.
Running back to Redman I saw Dave coming along.  Garry Holt had teamed up with Dave to help him along.  They wanted to borrow my    Ventolin so Garry managed to take a great catch while not missing a stride. He’s so smooth.  Back at Redman, Michael Kinne was waiting    for me to run into the finish.  Thanks Michael as there were no marshals on this part of the course and at least Michael knew where the    finish was after completing the half earlier in the day.
The run down Little Stanley Street was great.  I could see the Redman crew leaning over the barricades and cheering loudly.  I managed to    confuse the Finish Line staff as I had tony “Boydy” Pattemore’s number on the singlet as well as mine on my race belt.  Luckily Ricky had    passed on my reason for running with two numbers and all was good.  “Boydy” had run his marathon – hope you enjoyed the run Tony?     It was a pleasure to have you along for the ride.
It was disappointing to arrive at the recovery area to find only cups of water.  No sports drink, no food.  Geoff Roberts soon appeared    around the corner and was glad to be home.  Dave was spotted heading down the road with Garry trotting along like a faithful puppy    making sure his mate was going to get there safely.  Some time passed and everyone’s thoughts turned to Chris Davey.  Dave Shortt had    not been seen for some time either.   Apparently Dave went to run a few ks with Chris earlier in the day but had disappeared.  Suggestions    were made to their police buddies that they should send out a couple of bikes to see if Chris was ok.  Eventually Chris appeared at the top    of Little Stanley Street with two police bikes as escorts and Dave Shortt was seen running down the footpath.  Big Dave had gone to help    his mate and ended up running about 22k for his trouble.  That’s a great example of mateship.  Well done Dave.
Congratulations to Liz Dooley (13th female overall, 2nd Age group),  Geoff Roberts, Dave McKenna and Chris Davey for completing what I    believe to be one of the toughest marathons I have ever experienced.
Congratulations to Paul Ross, Michael Kinne, Garry Holt, Clare Dooley for great runs in the Half Marathon.
A big Thanks to Mel Canfell, Michael Kinne, Johnny Drysdale, Garry Holt and Dave Shortt for heading out on the course to run with the    marathoners.
Thanks to the Redman supporters on the day: Melanie, Tara, Jo, Helen, Christine, Dennis, Chris Buckley, Andreas and Katherine, Gary    Pettiford, Dave Shortt.

The following report is by a Brisbane runner by the name of Karl. He has been following our Half and full Marathon programs and          staying in email contact. Hopefully Karl will find time to join in with our group soon.

 Karl finishing the Noosa Half.

Well i finished, probably didnt help that i was finishing off a dose of antibiotics the day before the race, but i new i was in trouble at the         5k mark, just had no pace what so ever.. The 4hour pace maker shot past me at the 26k mark, that's were i knew my 3:55 time was         over, so i just plodded along and finished in 4:29. Didnt realise how many hills there were on the course. no excuse though, i'm sure i         will do better next time, thanks again for your help and the Marathon training program. Karl
