Brett's Ironman day. Hey everyone, Patrice and I are currently sitting in a cafe overlooking the beautiful, calm waters of Geographe Bay and we are both very content. (Will be more content when the wedges and sour cream show up!) Yesterday was a long day but a good day. I would have thought Ironman would get easier the more you do, but trust me, it doesn't. Had a good race with no problems at all to report. Nutrition was good and I ran the whole marathon. My overall time was 13:22 so that is a PB by over half an hour. My swim was 1:11, my bike 6:29, and the run 5:41. Conditions were pretty good and the sea was dead flat for race start. The wind on the third lap of the bike was a killer, and the heat on the run also made things a bit tough. Overall though, a good day out. I was very happy to finish smiling, and even happier to avoid the triage tent at the end. As you know, my last two efforts have seen me laid up in the hospital tent for a couple of hours. If that had happened again, I think P would have killed. But then again, it almost did! I had collected my shirt and medal, and was making my way to the food area where I became a little light headed. Thankfully my experience at Port Macquarie last year meant I was able to recognise the signs early so I raced outside into the cool air and sat on the ground for a rest. I mustn't have looked good because some volunteers came to my rescue and fetched a couple of bowls of fruit for me. That helped a lot but the next thing I know a wheelchair appeared to to take me down to the hospital tent. Thankfully I was able to convince them I was okay, and after topping up my blood sugar (???) was confident to go back in the tent and have a hot meal. Ironman is tough. Thanks for all your words of encouragement and text messages. We'll have some photos on Wednesday when we get back to Brisbane. Patrice as always was a champion, and bar for missing me off the bike because she had gone to KFC, was awesome in support. Will see you next Saturday to show off my medal! I saw Rachel out on course a couple of times and she was looking really good. She was going into the finishers chute as I started my last lap, so I reckon they finished in about 12 hours. It was good to have a familiar face to see out there. I look forward to comparing notes with her. Ironman WA has been run and won. Brett.R finished in a time of 13:22:46. He completed the 3.8km swim in 1:11:15, the 180km bike ride in 6:24:14 and the 42.2km (marathon) run in 5:33:50. Congratulations Brett on completing your third Ironman race! Rachael.P decided to run her first Marathon as part of an all girl team at the Busselton Ironman. I'll let her txt to Elf do the talking. "4hrs and 19mins in 28 degrees and 25k wind..... So pleased considering conditions! Our all girls Iron Maidens team was second". Fantastic effort guys !! Rachael's Ironman Marathon. I'm back in Bris as one very tired Iron Maiden......(mostly because I arrived back in Bris Vegas at 12.15 last night and had to contend with an e-mail inbox of 90 e-mails this morning!) I've attached the breakdown of the team event. My run time was 4hrs 19 and 19 sec(excluding transition), our team was 11hrs, 10 mins and the IRON MAIDENS all female team were second (out of 8)!!! I had hoped to be nearer the 4hr mark but considering the 29 deg C and the 25km wind, I figure that for my 1st marathon effort it wasn't too bad! Brett definitely saw me at my best as I was quite comfortable on the 1st and 2nd lap. I was chatting to competitors (only to those who were willing to chat back!), taking in the ocean view and keeping myself cool by throwing water over myself every 2k after shouting "water!" at the poor, unsuspecting volunteers and deafening other competitors in the process! However by my third lap I was in pain! Amazingly I didn't hit the wall, or get dehydrated (certain advice from a training run "to drink at every water station" rang through my head every 2K!) but my quads were like jelly whilst my stomach was in bits (I'd had too much caffeine to help me through)............ At 36Km I just wanted it to end and to keep myself going I started talking to myself (out loud) whilst visualising a strong, svelte Iron Maiden..... However, I did reach the final chute with my team mates running beside me and the pain went for a few seconds as it was announced that the 2nd all female team was coming through and the crowd went off...... It was just awwwweeeessoooooome! Crossing that line was one emotional experience and yep, I broke down in tears.... The tears are gone now, but the sore quads remain! I probably won't see you guys before Christmas so if not "have a good one!"...... but most importantly thanks for all your support, advice and encouragement over the past few months - especially to Elf Man. I couldn't have done it without you.......THANKYOU! Two short Youtube videos from the Redman Road Relay bus trip. WARNING both clips contain language which may offend. CLIP 1, CLIP2.

Kurrawa to Duranbah Sunday 14th of December: Good luck to the Redman Runner entrants, John.D, Andrew, Alan, Gary and Dave.Y.
Run Report for Tuesday 09th of December: Roughly 20 runners were present for this speed session. Judy had dreamt up a set that kept us all honest and competitive. The only problem was everyone attempting to get themselves into the slowest possible group. Except of course Elite who was keen to be in the quickest group. Great to see the majority of the Redman Runners beginning to recover from the Road Relay and still feeling fit after a long hard season where the performances throughout the group were simply fantastic. Time to enjoy the summer and let the body recover ready to go hard again next winter.
One of newest Red Man Runners Kellie tore the field apart last Sunday at the Tre-X Off Road Triathlon short course race. Not only did Kellie dominate her age group leading home the 9 girls in the category, she was the first female finisher in the race finishing 17th from 81. Redman Runners Xmas BBQ will be held immediately after the run on Saturday the 20th of December at South Bank. Finish your usual Saturday long run with a quick dip in the South Bank pools and join your fellow runners for a BBQ breakfast. Full details coming soon.
Run Report for Saturday 06th of December: Even at 5.30am it felt more like lunch time. The humidity was very noticeable and the heat was starting to impact on bodies standing quietly under the trees. You know it is hot when the cyclists glide past with their tops unzipped. Even the police boys were a little quiet. After a bit of a chat, everyone organised themselves into distance groups. Sunday run report. Having missed Saturday's run due to a bout of the Friday night "Tara's"; Mel was feeling guilty and keen for a Sunday run. Alan, Dave.Y, Deb (a friend of Dave's visiting from Canberra) and Elite "G" joined her. We opted for a sleep-in and started at 6.30am. Hot and humid! It was oppressive and running on tired legs from the ride the day before I was really struggling. When 'Elite' decided Mel was taking too long at one of the taps and started to bathe under the dog tap at the base of the water fountain I knew I wasn't the only one struggling. We covered the 15km Gu Stop run and headed down for a lazy Sunday breakfast. Saturday RIDE Report 6th December: Dave.Y, Alan, Tamsyn, Deb (visiting from Canberra) and Thor rolled out of the Robina train station with a 116km loop ride through the mountains of the Gold Coast hinterland ahead of them. Once again Dave predicted we wouldn't be bothered by storms and annoyingly he was correct again. It was a warm but generally overcast which meant conditions weren't too bad. Before we knew it we were making our first border crossing at the top of one of the nasty climbs. From there it is one of the more harrowing descents down toward the Chillingham fruit shop. About 5km out from Chillingham I was cruising along about 10 metres behind Deb when a loud nasty sounding noise came from her bike. At first I thought something had broken loose from her bike and was looking to avoid it but it turned out to be her tube bursting and her tyre giving way. We had plenty of tubes but no spare tyres so we went into improvisation mode. We eventually decided on lining the tyre with a GU wrapper. Is there anything GU can't fix? We got Deb's bike into Chillingham and decided to try and get it 15km more to Murwillumbah where we hope to find a bike shop. The Chillingham fruit shop lady told us she new a bike shop owner in Murwillumbah. (Why didn't that surprise me?). After a phone call to 'Jim' I was sent off on a solo sprint into Murwillumbah before closing time for Jim's Bikes. The whole town closes at lunch time on Saturday. He did give us his home number in case he had to head off first and promised he would come back down to the shop to help us. I'm guessing that wouldn't have been a promise in Brisbane. Would you believe that Plan A worked perfectly and Jim was still in the store when I arrived? Well it did, and they even managed to get Deb's bike into town so we could repair it while eating lunch. After that excitement it was just the toughest climb of the day (about 5km long and nasty) and some leg sapping short climbs and we were back at Robina. Whew! What a day out. Fantastic company and great fun. There was even a discussion on the way home of putting together the ultimate bike adventure from Bangkok to Singapore. Of course Dave had to go one step too far and suggest we start the adventure at the Phuket triathlon. We are now looking for suggestions for our next local ride possibly on Sunday the 21st of December. Run Report for Thursday 04th of December: By Elite.G: It seems the Redman Runners we will run in any weather from thunderstorms, cyclones or hail. After the big thunderstorm which hit Brisbane last Thursday out came the Redman Runners down to the Redman eager for a 10km tempo run. The group did Mel's run, even though she wasn't there which was out to Capt Burke Park around to Gladstone Rd and then home. It seemed much cooler and only puddles to watch out for. Elite says he took it easy although others claim he caned it, Mr Generator did what a generator does. Chris, Johnny and Mocha all took it easy and some said there was still talk about the Chris beat Wes story. I quite like this run as after running 5km the Gladstone Road hill hits you. A smaller version of Sydney's city to surf. Mel responds. It turns out that Mel was there and she can only assume that the Elite 'G' was travelling so quickly that he didn't see her.
The Bella Della Restaurant is NOW OPEN and the Elfman tells me the food tastes absolutely fantastic. He enjoyed lunch there yesterday. Bella Della Spaghetti Casa. 803 Stanley St Woolloongabba. 3391 6111. (At the base of the Gabba Central development).
